It was early one morning before Christmas when the brightness caught my eye.
What was that? I backed up to investigate.
It was a cross on the church steeple, shining with the brilliance of the lone morning star in the sky.
It was so bright because of its relationship to the sun.
The cross was directly facing the sun and it was beaming everywhere.
Today in the car, I heard myself yelling out, “I can’t believe I forgot my cell phone!”
I had left it at home on the table.
What if I needed it later? What if I missed something important? What if…?
This from a woman who grew up using pay phones and talking on a party line. (and if you don’t know what either of those are…let me just say, that YOU are very young..and I ….am very full of remembrances)
I then asked myself,” What are you facing right now Janet? Are you facing the sun?”
Quite simply, the answer was NO.
I was facing anger and worry, straight on.
And that is what got reflected back to me; more of the same of what I didn’t want.
When I made the choice to take a quarter turn toward the sun, this is what it sounded like in my head:
“How relaxing to not have my phone.
Nobody can reach me right now but me…I wonder what I most need to hear from myself to help me along the way today?”
It’s always our choice, what direction we face.
The quality of every day of our lives is absolutely determined by the focus of our attention.
Face the sun, face the light, face kindness, face gratitude, face willingness, face abundance.
It will be reflected back to you.
Each and every time.
How can it not?
It’s one of the many
incredible,
amazing,
laws of the universe.
Look out from where you are
and you will absolutely know,
in a very short time,
just what direction
you are facing.
Don’t like the reflection?
Start to turn
and don’t stop
until
you feel the glow
spread across your face
and reach down into your heart.
And then, welcome yourself
back home.
I found this story that so beautifully illustrates this idea of direction, focus and reflection.
It’s called The Three Hairs. Author unknown.
Enjoy.
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “H-M-M, ” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did and she had a fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head….
“YEAH!” she exclaimed, “I don’t have to fix my hair today!”
